…used to make watches in gold or other trendy colors, and ensures the color on a black watch will never chip or fade, Bolin says. But the process isn't limited to black: Geneva will introduce brown and gunmetal watches, which Bolin says are other emerging trends in timepieces.

"Gunmetal will be the new black; that's more of what the trend will lead into," he said. "But black will be a true staple."

A NEW WEAVE

The Sak is revamping its image for fall.

The San Francisco-based company isn't abandoning its signature tight-weave and crocheted satchels entirely, but it is expanding into different materials and new shapes. "We're repositioning primarily because the better department stores are looking for a trendier, more contemporary product," says Mark Talucci, chief executive officer of The Sak. "So we're compelled to be bolder in how we build Sak products."

The goal is to attract a younger, hipper customer who is willing to spend more for her accessories - and she'll have to, as The Sak plans to increase prices by up to 50 percent, ranging from $20 to $60 at wholesale. "Our price points [are going] up because we are investing in more authentic design and materials," he…

…now goes for $9,440, he said, and the price of gold has surged to more than $500 an ounce, rising 18 percent last year alone. It's near a 25-year high.

As demand for semiprecious stones has risen, so have prices. In the three years since Ben Affleck gave Jennifer Lopez a pink diamond engagement ring, designers have snapped up so many sparkly pink morganites (a less pricey alternative) that the wholesale price for a good quality stone has tripled to $150 a carat, says Joseph Menzie, president of the International Colored Gemstone Association, who estimates that consumers pay two or three times that much.

The wholesale price of a 5-carat apatite, a sometimes murky green stone, has risen 50 percent in the past five years to $210, he says. Apatite got its name from the Greek word "to deceive" because the stone can look like more-expensive gems such as peridot.

The result is that it's harder for consumers to tell which stones should command top dollar and which shouldn't. "I always thought anything that wasn't a diamond, ruby or emerald was the same as cubic zirconia - costume jewelry," said Cheryl Russo, an attorney from Hanover, Mass., who recently eyed a $150 pair of citrine earrings but didn't buy them.

…very disappointed the Democrats won, but I absolutely love her necklace. If my husband hears me, he's going to kill me," Rebibo recalled one Republican woman whispering into the phone.

CNN's "The Situation Room" also devoted a segment to Pelosi and her pearls. "When it comes to looks, they say female politicians get a lot more scrutiny than men. But instead of focusing on Nancy Pelosi's pearls of wisdom, the focus tends to be on her pearls, period," said correspondent Jeanne Moos. "For instance, this photo op resulted in requests for information on where to get the speaker-to-be's string of pearls. Shopping tips on-line to the rescue. These sure look a lot like Pelosi's pearls for a near $3,999. We didn't hear of anyone seeking information on where to get Senator Harry Reid's tie."

On-line shopping sites are selling "Pelosi" necklaces for $3,000 to $6,000. Pelosi's high profile means those pearls will be in the spotlight a lot during the coming months.

Barbara Walters interviewed her as one of the year's 10 most fascinating people. People magazine has written about her twice in recent months. An article in a Palm Springs newspaper ran with the headline: "How to Get the Nancy Pelosi Look."

When it comes to inspiration and elegance, Terezinha Geo Rodrigues, founder of Talento Joias has transformed this concept into her signature. The winner of dozens of global prizes including the prestigious Diamond International Award and the Gold Virtuosi Award, Talento's pieces are sensuous, and yet evoke a feeling of innocence. "Women all over the world love the independent, free spirit of Brazilian designs," says Rodrigues. "In the case of Talento, we always work with the very best precious stones and then incorporate them into seductive pieces that appeal to all different personality types--and that work for every occasion." Creative color is a trademark of the company, known for its long and sumptuous shoulder-length earrings, yet Talento also creates many pieces in white gold and white diamonds, showing off another side of Brazilian Style.
